FAIR TRADE IN TOURISM
What is Fair Trade In Tourism Initiative?
It has generally been recognized that the tourism industry of western countries has not generally given a fair deal to the developing countries in which tourist destination communities live. With this pattern tourism to these places is not sustainable in the longer term.
Fair Trade In Tourism is a recent initiative to promote sustainable tourism especially in the emerging tourism markets in the developing countries by:
- Focusing on having a fair trade partnerships between tourism and hospitality investors and local communities
- Fair share of the benefits of tourism goes to the local stakeholders by reducing leakages of proceeds out of the communities
- Promoting fair trade between tourists and local people
- Managing tourism in a way that sustains the natural resources and environment
- Fair wages and working conditions of local people
Recent surveys have revealed that tourist are prepared to pay more if that will mean helping to improve the lives of the destination communities and better management of the environment
