
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN THE UPPER EAST REGION

The Upper East region is one of the two the gateways to Ghana from Burkina Faso. It is a very important region and there has been the traditional crossroads for the trans-Saharan trade routes. An exciting introduction to Ghana, much of the landscape is broad savannah grasslands dotted with the strange-looking baobab tree or striking Sahel terrain. In the villages with their distinctive round huts, communal activities go on as they have done for generations.
The upper east region with its capital Bolgatanga has always been a meeting point for traders from Mali and Burkina Faso on their way south to Tamale and the southern parts of Ghana.
Bolga market
A splendid place to meet traders from all over the region and bargain for basket ware, leather goods, and traditional clothing.
The market continue to be important trading points and Bolgatanga is famous for center for handicrafts including straw hats, and baskets leather goods and metal jewellery. A small range of hotels will be found in ‘Bolga’ |
Tongo Rocks
The whistling rocks of Tongo rise dramatically from the landscape just 10km from Bolga and the Harmattan creates a ghostly whistling sound.

Located at the northeast border, this is a sacred sanctuary of crocodiles. The reptiles are enticed from the water by the custodians and make a surprising photograph to take home |
Naa Gbewaa’s Shrine
This traditional shrine commemorated Naa Gbewaa at Pusiga who founded the Mole-Dagbon tribe in the 13th century

FESTIVALS OF THE UPPER-EAST REGION
Damba Festival
It is celebrated by the Mamprusis with the venue in Bawku and its environs between July and August to mark the birth of Prophet Mohammed
Gologolo/Golib Festival
It is celebrated by the Telensis residing at Tenzug in March/April. It is intended to appeal to the gods for rains and a successful farming season. Lots of rituals are performed and it is climaxed by the public dancing and merry-making
Feok Festival
This is the annual festival of the people of Sandema in the Busila Traditional Area. It is a war festival marking their victory over the slave trader Babatu. It is usually held in December.There is display of war dance by various communities and a durbar of chiefs to climax the celebrations. |
Fao Festival
It is a thanksgiving festival for harvest, held by the Paga/Chiana and Kayoro Traditional Areas in their respective towns between November and February. The people display stalks of their first harvest of millet as a sign of sacrifice and thankfulness to the gods
