
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF THE NORTHERN REGION

The north is the largest region in Ghana and another granary of the country. Because of its size travelers will discover distinct changes in the landscapes and architecture as they travel through the region. As travelers head north the distinctive beautifully designed mud walled houses similar to those found in Mali and Burkina Faso that adapt so well to the climate are seen. |
Among the other attractions are:
Mole National Park
The northern region in the home of Mole National Park (160 km West of Tamale, a rich and unspoilt habitat for the herds of elephant, buck and lion and up to 93 species of mammal (including this rather colourful species of deer) and approximately 300 species of bird life. Early in the morning or late in the evening is the best time to see the game as they come down to the waterholes to drink. Also the occasional lion or leopard can be seen resting after a kill. |
Larabanga Mosque and Mystery Stone
The mosque is a splendid example of the Sudanese style of architecture. Believed to be built in the 13th century by Moorish traders, it is one of the holiest sites in Ghana. Close by is the mysterious boulder, the legend of the mystery stone will be explained by the villagers. |
Daboya
89km west of Tamale, Daboya is a a 16th century town from th the Gonja Kingdon and a famous source of hand-made textiles
Nalerigu Defense Wall
Part of the ancient slave route passed close to Nalerigu (120km south of Bolgatanga) where defensive wall was built in the 13th century to protect the village from raiders.
Salaga
The slave route is recognized at Salaga where the trans-Saharan caravans paused in Salaga market. Leg pegs can still be seen in the marketplace
Yendi
96km east of Tamale, Yendi was part of a 19th century German settlement. Many of the Germans who died in the battles with the Dagomba people are buried in the cemetery. The grave of the slave raider Batafu is said to be here.

FESTIVALS OF THE NORTHERN REGION
Jintigi Fire Festival
It is celebrated in April every year by the people of Gonjaland at their traditional capital of Damango. A torchlight procession to the outskirts of all the villages and towns in the area as well as special consultations of the Koran are some of he activites of the festival
Damba Festival
The Damba Festival celebrated under the lunar calendar by the people of Dagbon, Mamprugu,Gonja and Nanumba to commemorate the birthday of the prophet Mohammed. Activies include prayers and fasting and procession of people on horseback amidst drumming and dancing |
Bugum Chugu (Fire Festival)
It is celebrated under the lunar calendar throughout the Northern Region by the Dagombas,Nanombas and Mamprusis. the main activity is a torchlight procession of the celebrants amidst music and dancing. The significance of the Bugumis to commemorate the search for the lost son of an ancient king.
