                           TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF THE EASTERN REGION


The eastern region of Ghana has a rich blend of dramatic landscapes, historic relics and traditional cultures. The ancient blends with the modern in a region so close to but so different from Accra. The region is dominated by Lake Volta, the largest manmade lake in the world and the Akosombo Dam, the source of much of Ghana’s hydroelectric power. Striking landscapes are overlooked by the Krobo Mountains and the Akwapim Ridge. The countryside is great walking. the Eastern region is famous for its vast tropical rain forests and cascading waterfalls. The main attractions are:

1. Aburi Botanical Gardens:

              An alley in the  Aburi Botanical Gardens

These century-old botanical gardens, about one hour drive
 from Accra, offer a rich collection of tropical flora which
attract scores of birds and butterflies. It also provides
a rich resource for botanical studies in the Universities
The tranquil paths are popular excursions for our city dwellers.
     

   

2. Tetteh Quarshie’s Cocoa farm 

The first cocoa farm established in the country from seeds brought from Fernando Po Island. From this small seeds grew our major cocoa industry.

3. Lake Volta

One of the largest man-made lakes in the world and the Akosombo Dam are two of Ghana’s greatest achievements. The lake offers opportunities for cruising especially to the Dodi Islands in the middle of the lake.

4. Akonedi Shrine Larteh

On the Akwapem Ridge, the fetish shrine is an important part of traditional healing and religious ceremonies

5. Slave Market of Abonse

Traces of the 17th century slave market can still be seen in  a town that was an important crossroads on the slave-route

6. Okomfo Anokye Shrine

60 km from Koforidua this important shrine is dedicated to the legendary priest credited with the founding of the Asante Empire

7. Boti Falls

Spectacular but seasonal, waterfalls in the forest reserve at Huhunya. In the immediate vicinity are cascades at their best in June to August 

8. The waterfalls of Begoro

A series of falls and cascades surrounded by attractive woodlands and forest. Just the place for a picnic.


   

The following are a few of the the numerous festivals celebrated in the Eastern region:

1. Bobum or Dipo Festival

Dipo is celebrated in April by the people of Manya and Yilo Krobo in the towns of Krobo Odumase and Somanya,about 80km north of Accra. Th mode of celebration is that adolescent girls are adorned in beautiful beads and half-clothed. The festival initiates such girls into womanhood.

2. Odwira and Ohum Festivals

Akwapem Odwira and Ohum festivals usually commencing in September and ending in January are two of the most well known. Each of them is crowned with a colourful durbar of chiefs and people of the areas concerned. Culture is seen at its best during these festivals
