                             TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF ASHANTI REGION


The Ashanti Region is a kingdom of gold, history and culture. It occupies the centre of the country. The region is the hub of the ancient kingdom of Asante and it is still the heartland of all Asantes wherever they might be. Kumasi is the ancient capital of the region. It was founded by the Asantehene (king of Asante),Osei Tutu, in 1695. It is impossible to meaningfully visit Ghana without visiting the Ashanti region. Some of the attractions are:

A. Kumasi and the Asante Heritage:

The Manhyia Palace and museum:

The palace of the Asante King with the exotic splendour. The Prempeh II Jubilee Museum, Kumasi Fort and Military Museum and the Centre for National Culture are historic backdrops of distinct culture and history. 
                                                 
The cultural Attractions

These are places where important cultural illustrations can be seen; these include:
  • Asantemanso village,
  • Kumawu town,
  • Kentinkronu shrine,
  • Ejisu-Bisease shrine

Festivals and Funerals.

   
  
These are very colourful events.
Funerals are usually held on
Saturdays amidst displays of
drumming dancing and pageantry.
They are all essential tourist hotspots:

Of the festivals, Adae Kese is one of the most important festivals to attend. It is usually held to celebrate the achievements of the Asante Kingdom.

Ashanti Gold Mines

Ashanti is home to the most important mines in Ghana including the Obuasi Gold Mines whose shares are sold on the New York Stock Exchange

Some of the other attractions are:

Kejetia Market

It is the largest open-air market in West Africa. Artisans from a lot of villages bring various handicrafts for sale in the market. The crafts include Kente cloth, pottery, woodcarvings, bead-making and brassware

B. The Natural attractions of Ashanti

With the region well endowed with forests, wildlife can easily be spotted around the lakes and the natural reserves while birds and 'clouds' of butterflies could easily be seen in the forests while trekking or having relaxing forest walks.  Among the crucial hotspots are the following:

  • Lake Bosumtwi
  • Owabi Bird Sanctuary
  • Bomfobiri Wildlife Sanctuary with its seasonal waterfall
  • Mframabuom Caves etc.
